She oversees over 10 active IDEA Lab projects and provides structural and organizational support for clinicians interested in medical innovation. Daina Andries

Daina Andries is a co-founder and Head of Product at Epidaurus Health, a health tech startup in Alexandria, Virginia, focused on streamlining prior authorizations for prescription medications. Following a successful application for an SBIR Award from the National Science Foundation, Daina devoted hundreds of hours to interviewing physicians, pharmacists, administrators and health service technicians to document the prior authorization process in as much depth as possible. Daina’s research has informed the underlying architecture of Epidaurus Health’s prior authorization solution as well as electronic personal health (ePHI) data curation strategies to ensure responsible AI applications. Prior to her immersion in healthcare, Daina worked with clients in fintech as a data science consultant. One of the most promising opportunities to improve care and lower costs is the move of care delivery to the home. An increasing number of new and established organizations are launching and scaling models to move primary, acute, and palliative care to the home. For frail and vulnerable patients, home-based care can forestall the need for more expensive care in hospitals and other institutional settings.

There are tremendous opportunities to improve care through these home-based care models, but there are significant risks and challenges to their broader adoption. Today’s panel will discuss the challenges of providing quality care within these settings, especially in rural communities and discuss available solutions to enhance patient’s experiences and outcomes.

State Health Assessment-State Health Improvement Plan Manager, Chronic Disease Section, Bureau of Population Health and Community Services

Alia Hayes discovered her passion for public health in 2003 at Tufts University, earning a BA/MPH with a focus on Nutrition. Her career began as a research assistant at Tufts Friedman School, working on a project to reduce childhood obesity in rural areas across four states. She later shifted to a nutrition intervention role in assisted living and nursing home settings. Seeking change, Alia moved to teaching health to middle school students in Peabody, Massachusetts, where she revamped the health curriculum and collaborated with organizations to enhance student health protections.

In 2017, she joined the Rural Health and Primary Care Section at the NH Department of Health and Human Services. Her work involved improving care quality at Critical Access Hospitals and leading strategic planning initiatives, including the creation of a support group for working mothers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alia played a significant role in ensuring equity in vaccine distribution and service planning in New Hampshire.

In December 2021, Alia assumed the role of State Health Assessment and State Health Improvement Plan Manager, coordinating a major health grant for New Hampshire and managing funding for COVID-19 Health Disparities. She led a significant investment into Mobile Integrated Healthcare and Care Coordination for rural chronic disease patients.

Johanna L. Beliveau, DNP, MBA, RN

President and CEO, Visiting Nurse and Hospice for Vermont and New Hampshire

Johanna Beliveau, DN, MBA, RN is the President and Chief Executive Officer at Visiting Nurse and Hospice for Vermont and New Hampshire (VNH). She was appointed by a unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees and assumed her role in June 2018. Johanna is an experienced healthcare leader with 20 years in nursing practice.

Johanna holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Yale University, a Master of Business Administration from Rosemont College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Fitchburg State College, and a Lean Six-Sigma Black Belt certificate from the Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth College. An active member of the American Organization of Nurse Leaders, Johanna was selected as a Nurse Director fellow in 2015.

Prior to joining VNH, Johanna served in multiple roles within the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System, most recently as Director of Quality, Patient Safety and Compliance for Mt. Ascutney Hospital and Health Center and Associate Chief Nursing Officer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Her clinical and leadership experience includes hospice and palliative care, pediatrics, home health, hospice and hospital operations, regulatory readiness, quality improvement and patient safety science. Through her career, Johanna has implemented several strategic initiatives including the development of clinical advancement models, reducing employee turnover, implementing team care behaviors, and safety behaviors for error prevention.

Jeff Sedlack, MD,

Medical Director, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care

Jeff Sedlack has served as the Medical Director for New Hampshire and Maine at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care /Point32Health for over 8 ½ years. A fervent advocate for healthcare improvement, Jeff is deeply involved in combating food insecurity. He credits Maine’s work on the childhood hunger conference as "transformative" in shaping his approach towards enhancing childhood nutrition in the state. Having lived in Maine for 14 years, Jeff spent his first 6 years there as a General Surgeon in Belfast. Outside of his primary role, Jeff also practiced as a trauma and acute care surgeon in Anchorage, Alaska, before the pandemic. While serving as the OR director in Alaska, he initiated a "micro-food pantry" from the office, addressing food insecurity among his group’s patients. Currently, Jeff is pursuing a Master's degree in Logistics at Northeastern. He is passionately committed to refining the logistics of health delivery for the people of New England.

Jay Hoying holds the dual positions of Partner and Chief Scientist at Advanced Solutions Life Sciences (ASLS). With an expansive career spanning over three decades in both basic and applied biological sciences, he brings specialized expertise in tissue biology, vascularization, and fabrication. At ASLS, Jay oversees a dynamic laboratory dedicated to crafting advanced, vascularized human tissue models and therapeutic solutions. Before joining the ASLS fold, he distinguished himself as the Professor and Division Chief of Cardiovascular Therapeutics at the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute (CII). Here, he honed a diverse skill set encompassing tissue fabrication, cell therapeutics, and translating academic discoveries to industrial and clinical applications. An inventive force, Dr. Hoying is the brain behind the Angiomics® vascularization technology and is credited with a multitude of patents centered around vascularized tissues and their related cell therapies. On the academic front, he secured his BA and MS in Biology and Molecular Biology from Case Western Reserve University, followed by a PhD emphasizing microcirculation in Cardiovascular Physiology from the University of Arizona. Post his degree achievements, Dr. Hoying took up the mantle as a New Investigator under the NIH Program of Excellence in Molecular Biology of the Heart and Lung (POEMB). He currently offers his expertise in reviewing grant proposals for esteemed organizations like the National Institutes of Health, Veterans Affairs, the American Heart Association, among others. Dr. Ryan Halter

Dr. Ryan Halter, Associate Professor at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering

With a strong academic background in Engineering Science and Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering from institutions like Pennsylvania State University and Dartmouth, Dr. Ryan Halter brings a plethora of expertise to his role as Associate Professor at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering. Apart from his main role, he holds the dual positions of Adjunct faculty in Dartmouth’s Computer Science Department and the Department of Surgery at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. He's also a pivotal member of the Cancer Imaging and Radiobiology Program at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. The foundations of his academic achievements were laid at Penn State where he secured his BS in 1999 and MS in 2001, followed by a PhD from Dartmouth in 2006. His doctoral research led to the creation of a novel electrical impedance tomography device specifically for breast cancer imaging. Post his PhD, he ventured into a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, funded by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program of the DoD, where he explored the clinical implications of electrical impedance sensing in the realm of prostate cancer detection. This laid the foundation for his research program centered around the development of technologies to sense and image the electrical properties of tissues for clinical applications.

Beyond his focus on electrical property sensing and imaging, Dr. Halter's research interests span the vast domain of medical devices. Mr. Taylor Caswell is the first commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Business and Economic Affairs. First appointed to the position by Gov. Chris Sununu in 2017, Commissioner Caswell serves as the chief economic and marketing official for the state and oversees the state Divisions of Economic Development and Travel & Tourism Development, enabling and growing economic vitality for residents and employers in the Granite State.

In this role, Caswell has defined the narrative of New Hampshire as place where people want to live and work and where companies can grow and thrive in the state’s unique tax and opportunity climate. In collaboration with policy makers, stakeholders and business leaders, he is working to update and modernize the state’s broad infrastructure of community and economic stakeholders into a more strategic and meaningful network that will be critical to sustaining and growing New Hampshire’s economy in the next century. In 2020, Commissioner Caswell pivoted to lead state economic relief recovery efforts in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. BEA spearheaded the state’s economic recovery efforts in coordination with other state agencies and partner organizations around the state.  Caswell also co-chaired the state Economic Reopening Task Force, a bi-partisan public/private group which reviews and recommended sector operations guidance. Since September of 2020, Caswell has also served as the head of the Governor’s Office for Emergency Relief and Recovery (GOFERR), with responsibility for transparent development, deployment and management of more than $2 billion in federal COVID relief and stimulus funds to New Hampshire.

Caswell’s experience in the private sector includes structuring and funding renewable power and affordable housing development, financial services and government relations work for a Fortune 500 energy company.

Kim Rosenfield, J.D. joined the Office of Entrepreneurship & Tech Transfer in 2017 and became Director of Tech Transfer in 2020. Kim has served as a strategic legal and business advisor to universities, medical centers, companies, and entrepreneurs for more than 30 years. She previously worked at MIT and Partners Healthcare Innovations in Cambridge, and served as General Counsel and Board Secretary of the Research Foundation for the State University of New York, which manages all sponsored projects and intellectual property for SUNY’s 32 research campuses, and the UAB Research Foundation. She was previously General Counsel for Stereotaxis, a NASDQ listed university spin-off medical equipment company, and VP Commercial Transactions for a NYSE pharma company. She was a co-founder and member of the management team of BioHorizons, and represented universities, start-ups, and publicly- traded companies as a Member of Mintz Levin in Boston, and before that, as Head of the IP Practice at Sirote Permutt in Birmingham, AL. Kim is a graduate of Yale College and University of Virginia School of Law. She is an avid audience member and supporter of the performing arts – especially when her kids are onstage – and is Board Chair of Camille A. Brown & Dancers. A former small business owner, Demers has also served in various roles throughout the state with the NH Sector Partnerships Initiative, the University of New Hampshire-Manchester and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
